about

The original version of this song about the Amtrak tragedy was created by Amy Denio and me on a Saturday and released online about
four years ago. When this Olympia album came around, I figured it was
time for an all-new version. A major piece of Oly history and our second
train wreck song on the album! I asked Calvin Johnson to sing it
as a country duet. He said sure and suggested I try to track down Gretchen Christopher of The Fleetwoods to sing it with him. I was unable to reach her. I asked Amy if she’d reprise her vocal on the new version - she kindly said yes and the True Olympians tracked it country-style, with that Johnny Cash Tennessee Three’s lick between verses.
Amy and Calvin thought it needed fresh new words and, by jiminy, now
we have them! Stir in a little chicken pickin’ from Ali Dee and some sweet fiddle from Eros Faulk, bake that hoedown pie for four minutes – all done! It’s not any trickier than that.
For all you weeping Fleetwood’s fans out there, please know I did a fully
reverent version of “Come Softly To Me” on my 2015 album History of
Northwest Rock Vol. 1 (1959-1968).

lyrics

Amtrak hurtles 501
Blazing the new Cascades route
Bank the curve in double time
Passengers strewn all about

Death at Mounts Road
Speed thrills
Coffee kills
Positive train control
Death at Mounts Road

The voyage full to the brim
The coffee piping hot
New curve, new crew, new begin
When 501 collides with fate

Death at Mounts Road
Speed thrills
Coffee kills
Positive train control
Death at Mounts Road

The passengers were there to celebrate
Until the train flew onto the freeway
So many were injured
So many were dead
Fate, fate go away, strike your bargain with some other train

To shave time off the route
The Amtrak engineer
Pushed to accelerate
Now there’s less to celebrate

Death at Mounts Road
Speed thrills
Coffee kills
Positive train control
Death at Mounts Road
