about

I’d never heard of Little Hollywood before I checked out Olympia: A People’s History from the downtown library. The part in the song about Joe’s daddy is a complete fiction by Joe, conveyed to the composer - an artistic vision! Originally this song was tracked at our first session for the album, but I decided to record it again. I had the idea to do it super spare – piano and vocal. Joe took the ball and ran with it, recording it with his pal Bob Hart and doing the lead vocal himself.
Nice work, Joe! We added Lisa and Virginia, then stirred the pot – voila!

A People’s History (pp. 17-19). Olympia, WA: City of Olympia

lyrics

Hollywood, Little Hollywood
Gonna meet Big Nel there tonight

Maybe 1924, nobody is sure
Little Hollywood grew on the shore of the Deschutes Estuary
Floating shacks and those less privileged
Above them, the Capitol dome soared

Hollywood, Little Hollywood
Gonna meet Big Nel there tonight
Hollywood, Little Hollywood
Everything gonna be alright tonight

Little Hollywood was a rough and tumble place
A stiff drink could be had there in the prohibition years
Joe's daddy was a high school boy in 1941
In Little Hollywood, he became a man

In 38, the legislature voted to build Capitol Lake
A reflecting lake had always been the Capitol architects' plan
They moved some people out of there for the next four years
Then they burned it down

Hollywood Little Hollywood
In 1942, they burned you down
