From The Null Set owner/author Pat Holm:
It was 1964 when my then-husband Pete Holm, our friends Bob and Bonnie Gillis, and I came together to bring Olympia its very first coffee house. It was called the Null Set, named after the mathematical term meaning “the set that does not contain anything.” It was meant to stand for unrealized potential and new possibilities.
The Null Set was a place where really talented musicians came to play their music and could count on making a few dollars. All kinds of live music was accompanied by tasteful specialty coffees and old-fashioned sodas.
It was only open in the evenings with slightly later hours on the weekend. It became a central location for the community to gather, and exchange ideas about what was going on in the world at the time: The Vietnam War, Selma and civil rights, and changing social mores. Olympia began to experience the Beat Generation and later the hippie movement. The city fathers were not pleased.
Pat’s book The Null Set Remembered is available at fine Olympia stores. Invaluable info for the song was provided by Dusty Rhodes and Carla Wulfsberg.
Going to The Null Set, baby, feeling mighty fine
Going to The Null Set, gonna have a good time
August 22nd, baby, 1964
Tonight is the first night they open up their doors
Making up a folk scene, baby, espresso going down
Banjo, washboard, and guitar Hootenanny out!
Bonnie, Bob and Pete and Pat were Unitarians
They pooled their money and their work
A nice little scene was born
Going down to Apple Jam now, 1969
Going down to Apple Jam, some bluegrass on my mind
And Celtic and Cajun and Blues, whatever Burt and Di can find
You can build a guitar there in ten minutes - wow!
Fiddle Fest, Centralia Campout
Tumwater Bluegrass Festival
Contra Dance, Old Time
Medicine Show
Oly Mountain Boys’ Steamboat Jamboree
So much music, so many people
Generations learning these tunes
They wanna save ‘em
They wanna share ‘em
They want to make them into something new
Going to Traditions, baby, 1996
Local players, touring artists and Carla’s fiddle fest
You can get a sandwich there and even a cold beer
It’s got some brand-new owners, now we hope they last for many years
Going to Arbutus Folk School, 2012
Music and a lot of craft work
Olympia Old Time Festival
Wood, ceramic, fiber, metal, stone arts and much, much more
The 501(C)3 child of The Null Set
It still ain’t done

First album in 7 years from Olympians. It ranging from industrial to free jazz to slowcore folk, stoner rock to chamber in effortless leaps. Cool as fuck. Listen to this! Tom Dyer and The True Olympians
Nudity is my favorite Olympia band. Guitar ripping, Kraut rock inspired 4 women plus Dave. They are the real deal. All their albums are worthy! Tom Dyer and The True Olympians
